Currently, India holds 7,204 million tonnes of carbon stock, making it one of the top carbon sink countries globally (5th rank). Forest ecosystems act as natural carbon absorbers by capturing atmospheric CO₂ through photosynthesis. A major share (56%) of this carbon is stored in soil organic matter, emphasizing the importance of soil health.

India’s climate commitments under NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) aim to create an additional carbon sink of 3.5–4 billion tonnes by 2035, which is crucial for achieving global climate goals under the Paris Agreement.
