IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2027–28

Prelims, Mains, Descriptive Test, Timing and Marking Rules for 2027–28 Vacancies

IBPS PO Exam Pattern for 2027–28 vacancies under CRP PO/MT-XVI: Prelims, Mains, descriptive test, sectional timing, negative marking and selection stages.

The IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2026 for CRP PO/MT-XVI defines the examination structure used for recruitment against Probationary Officer/Management Trainee vacancies of the financial year 2027–28. Candidates should therefore understand that searches for IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2026, IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2027-28 and CRP PO/MT-XVI Exam Pattern refer to the same current recruitment cycle.

The IBPS PO selection process includes the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, a mandatory Personality Test, Common Interview and subsequent provisional allotment.

In the Preliminary Examination, candidates answer 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes. The Main Examination contains 170 objective questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes, followed by an Essay and Comprehension descriptive test of 25 marks in 30 minutes.

A particularly important feature of the current pattern is that marks and questions are not distributed equally across all sections. Candidates should therefore prepare according to the latest notified structure instead of relying on older IBPS PO exam-pattern tables.

Candidates must qualify the Preliminary Examination to become eligible for the Main Examination. Candidates shortlisted through the Main Examination are required to complete the Personality Test process before the Common Interview.

The Preliminary Examination works as the screening stage. Final merit, however, is determined from the Main Examination and Interview in the prescribed 80:20 relative weightage.

IBPS PO Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The IBPS PO Preliminary Examination consists of three separately timed objective sections:

English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability.

Each section provides 20 minutes, giving candidates a total examination duration of 60 minutes.

The distribution deserves special attention because the number of questions and maximum marks are not identical in every section.

Quantitative Aptitude contains 35 questions for 30 marks, while Reasoning Ability contains 35 questions for 40 marks. English Language contains 30 questions for 30 marks.

Candidates should therefore avoid using older or generic tables that show identical marks for Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability.

Is IBPS PO Prelims Qualifying in Nature?

Yes. The IBPS PO Preliminary Examination is used for shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination.

Candidates are required to qualify the individual tests by securing the minimum cut-off marks determined by IBPS. An adequate number of candidates in each category, depending upon recruitment requirements, are then shortlisted for the Main Examination.

Preliminary Examination marks are not included in the final combined merit score.

This makes Prelims primarily a test of speed, accuracy, question selection and the ability to clear the required qualifying standards.

IBPS PO Negative Marking 2026

Negative marking applies to incorrect answers in the objective tests of both the Preliminary and Main examinations.

The technically accurate IBPS rule is:

For each objective question answered incorrectly, one-fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that particular question is deducted as a penalty.

If a question is left unanswered, no penalty is applied to that question.

This distinction is important because the safest interpretation of the notification is not simply “0.25 marks are deducted from every wrong answer.” The penalty is linked to the marks assigned to the particular question.

Candidates should therefore focus on accuracy rather than making random attempts merely to increase their number of attempted questions.

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern 2026

Candidates shortlisted after the Preliminary Examination become eligible for the Main Examination.

The current IBPS PO Main Examination has two components:

Objective Test: 170 questions, 200 marks and 160 minutes.

Descriptive Test: 2 questions, 25 marks and 30 minutes.

The complete Main Examination therefore carries 225 marks with a total testing duration of 190 minutes or 3 hours 10 minutes.

This distribution reveals a key feature of the current IBPS PO Main Examination.

Reasoning, Awareness and Data Analysis & Interpretation collectively account for 180 of the 200 objective marks, or 90% of the objective-paper marks.

English Language contains 40 questions but carries 20 marks.

This does not mean English can be ignored. Candidates still need strong accuracy and must satisfy the applicable qualifying requirements. However, the table shows why candidates should study both question count and marks weightage when planning their Mains preparation.

IBPS PO Mains Reasoning Pattern

Reasoning contains 40 questions for 60 marks with 45 minutes.

It therefore contributes 30% of the total objective Main marks.

The current Main table uses the section name Reasoning, so candidates should be cautious when referring to older material based on previous section labels and structures.

IBPS PO General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness Pattern

The Awareness section contains 50 questions for 60 marks in 35 minutes.

Its notified scope includes General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness, including RBI Circulars.

This means Mains preparation should not be restricted to broad current affairs alone. Candidates should maintain regular coverage of banking developments, RBI-related updates, financial-sector developments, digital banking, important economic developments and relevant current affairs.

IBPS PO English Language Pattern in Mains

The Mains English Language section contains 40 questions for 20 marks in 35 minutes.

It accounts for 10% of the 200 objective Main marks.

The mismatch between question count and maximum marks is another reason candidates should not judge the importance of a section merely by counting questions.

IBPS PO Data Analysis and Interpretation Pattern

Data Analysis & Interpretation contains 40 questions carrying 60 marks in 45 minutes.

It contributes 30% of the objective Main marks, equal to the marks allotted to Reasoning and the Awareness section.

Candidates targeting the Main Examination should therefore practise advanced data interpretation and analytical question selection under sectional time limits.

IBPS PO Descriptive Paper Pattern 2026

Candidates should specifically note that the current CRP PO/MT-XVI Main pattern shows Essay and Comprehension.

Older preparation material based on Essay and Letter Writing should therefore not be treated as the current exam-pattern table.

The descriptive topics may broadly cover areas such as economic and social issues, developments in banking and technology, current events and ethics.

Candidates type their descriptive responses on a computer.

The notification also provides for the possibility of using a validated automated scoring mechanism for identifying features associated with English writing proficiency.

For the Essay component, candidates should focus on a clear introduction, logical development of arguments, relevant examples, balanced analysis, grammatical accuracy and a concise conclusion.

For Comprehension, the priority should be correct understanding of the passage, identification of central ideas, concise expression and accurate grammar rather than decorative vocabulary.

Overall marks unchanged

The most important numerical change is that candidates now face 170 objective questions instead of 145 while the objective duration remains 160 minutes.

That makes question selection, sectional speed and accuracy particularly important.

IBPS PO Sectional Timing

Both the Preliminary and Main objective examinations use separately timed tests.

In Prelims, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability each receive 20 minutes.

In Mains, Reasoning receives 45 minutes, Awareness 35 minutes, English Language 35 minutes and Data Analysis & Interpretation 45 minutes.

Candidates therefore cannot freely transfer unused time from one section to another.

Section-wise timed practice is essential for becoming familiar with the actual examination environment.

These are simple mathematical averages rather than recommended attempt times.

Different questions require different amounts of time. The figures are useful primarily for understanding the importance of quick question selection and avoiding excessive time on a single difficult problem.

Does IBPS PO Have Sectional Cut-Offs?

Candidates appearing in the Preliminary Examination are required to qualify in each of the three tests by securing the minimum cut-off marks decided by IBPS.

The qualifying standard is determined by IBPS and is not a permanently fixed number that candidates can assume before the official result or score information is available.

Candidates should therefore avoid relying on an unofficial fixed sectional cut-off when planning attempts.

IBPS PO Personality Test 2026

Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are required to participate in a Personality Test (Self-Report) before the Interview process.

The Personality Profile generated through this process may be placed before the Interview panel.

The Personality Test should therefore be treated as a separate and mandatory stage of the recruitment process rather than being hidden inside the Interview heading.

Its marks do not form part of the 80:20 final merit calculation, which is based on the Main Examination and Interview.

IBPS PO Interview Pattern 2026

Candidates shortlisted through the Main Examination and completing the required Personality Test process are subsequently called for the Common Interview.

A candidate must qualify both the Main Examination and Interview and rank sufficiently high in the combined merit to be considered for the subsequent provisional-allotment process.

IBPS PO Final Merit Calculation

Preliminary Examination marks do not contribute to the final combined score.

The final merit calculation uses:

What the Latest IBPS PO Pattern Means for Preparation

The current pattern requires candidates to prepare according to marks distribution, sectional timing and the difference between the Preliminary and Main examinations.

For subject-wise topics, see the IBPS PO Syllabus 2027–28 guide.

For Prelims, the combination of 100 questions and only 60 separately timed minutes makes speed, accuracy and question selection essential.

For Mains, Reasoning, Awareness and Data Analysis & Interpretation carry 60 marks each, while English Language contains 40 questions for 20 marks.

The Awareness section also contains the largest number of objective Main questions at 50.

A sound preparation plan should therefore combine sectional mock practice, advanced reasoning and Data Interpretation, consistent banking/economy/financial/digital awareness including RBI developments, reliable English accuracy and regular descriptive writing practice.

Common IBPS PO Exam Pattern Mistakes to Avoid

Candidates preparing for CRP PO/MT-XVI should not use an older table showing 145 Main objective questions.

They should also avoid assuming that the current Descriptive Paper follows an older Letter Writing + Essay structure. The current exam-pattern table specifies Essay and Comprehension.

Another common mistake is stating that exactly “0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.” The more precise official rule is one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question.

Finally, candidates should not ignore the Personality Test because it does not contribute direct marks to the final merit calculation. It is an important pre-interview stage in the current recruitment process.

Official Verification Note

This page covers the current IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI examination structure for vacancies of 2027–28.

Candidates should use the official IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI notification, corrigenda and subsequent examination notices as the final authority for any change in the pattern, dates, instructions or recruitment process.
