A notable feature of the Main Examination is that Professional Knowledge carries the highest weightage, while the other objective sections are qualifying in nature. Merit listing is based on the Professional Knowledge test after candidates qualify the remaining sections.

Is There Sectional Timing in IBPS SO?

Yes.

IBPS follows section-wise timing in both the Preliminary and Main Examinations.

Candidates cannot switch between sections before the allotted time for a section ends.

This ensures equal opportunity for all candidates and prevents excessive time allocation to a single subject.

Is There Sectional Cut Off in IBPS SO?

Yes.

As per the official notification:

  • Candidates are required to obtain the minimum qualifying marks in each test.
  • IBPS decides the sectional cut-off depending upon the examination difficulty level and the number of candidates appearing.
  • Only candidates meeting the sectional and overall qualifying criteria are shortlisted for the next stage.

IBPS SO Negative Marking 2026

Yes, there is negative marking in both the Preliminary and Main objective examinations.

Marking Scheme

  • Correct Answer: Full marks awarded.
  • Incorrect Answer: 0.25 marks deducted.
  • Unanswered Question: No penalty.

For every wrong answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question are deducted from the candidate's total score.

IBPS SO Interview Pattern 2026

Candidates qualifying the Main Examination are called for the Interview conducted by the participating banks.

IBPS SO Exam Day Guidelines

Candidates should keep the following points in mind:

  • Carry the Preliminary/Main Call Letter.
  • Bring the original valid photo ID along with a photocopy.
  • Reach the examination centre before the reporting time.
  • Candidates reporting late will not be allowed to enter the examination hall.

  • Follow biometric verification and identity verification procedures at the exam centre.

Preparation Strategy Based on the Exam Pattern

Understanding the exam pattern can help candidates allocate their preparation time effectively:

  • Professional Knowledge should receive the highest priority, as it has the maximum weightage in the Main Examination.
  • Build a strong foundation in Reasoning and English Language to comfortably clear the qualifying sections.
  • For IT, Agriculture, HR, and Marketing posts, practice Quantitative Aptitude regularly.
  • For Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari, focus on Banking Awareness instead of Quantitative Aptitude in the Preliminary Examination.
  • Attempt sectional and full-length mock tests to improve speed and accuracy while minimizing negative marking.
