SSC CPO Exam Pattern 2026: New Paper-I & Paper-II Pattern, Sectional Timing, Marks and Selection Proces

The Staff Selection Commission has completely revised the SSC CPO 2026 examination pattern. Paper-I now contains 100 questions for 100 marks, while Paper-II has been expanded to 160 questions carrying 320 marks.

Both papers have compulsory sectional timing. Candidates cannot freely divide the total examination time among different subjects.

The most important change is that Paper-II now includes Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. Previously, Paper-II was primarily an English Language and Comprehension paper.

The SSC CPO 2026 pattern is fundamentally different from the previous examination structure.

Most Important Changes

• Paper-I has been reduced from 200 questions to 100 questions.
• Paper-I duration has been reduced from 120 minutes to 60 minutes.
• A compulsory 15-minute sectional timer has been introduced in Paper-I.
• Paper-II is no longer an English-only examination.
• Paper-II now tests all four subjects.
• Paper-II carries 320 marks, making it the most important stage.
• English Comprehension alone carries 200 marks in Paper-II.
• Negative marking in Paper-II has increased to 0.50 mark per wrong answer.
• According to the official selection rules, final selection is based on Paper-II performance, including applicable NCC bonus marks, after candidates qualify all mandatory stages.

SSC CPO Paper-I Exam Pattern 2026

SSC CPO Paper-I is a one-hour Computer-Based Examination consisting of four sections. Every section has a separate 15-minute timer.

SSC CPO Paper-I Marking Scheme

• One mark is awarded for every correct answer.
• 0.25 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
• No mark is normally deducted for an unanswered question.
• Marks obtained in multiple shifts may be normalized according to the SSC normalization procedure.
• Applicable NCC bonus marks are added to the normalized score.

How Does the Paper-I Sectional Timer Work?

Each subject has a fixed time limit of 15 minutes.

For example, candidates must complete the Reasoning section within its allotted 15 minutes. Unused time from one section cannot be transferred to another section. Therefore, candidates should prepare through section-wise timed mock tests, not only full-length tests.

SSC CPO Paper-II Exam Pattern 2026

Paper-II has undergone the biggest change. It now includes all four major subjects and contains 160 questions for 320 marks.

SSC CPO Paper-II Marking Scheme

• Each correct answer carries 2 marks.
• 0.50 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer.
• The paper has a total duration of two hours.
• Reasoning, General Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude receive 20 minutes each.
• English Comprehension receives 60 minutes.
• The difficulty level of Paper-II will be higher than that of Paper-I.

Why Is Paper-II Crucial?

Paper-II is the decisive written stage because:

• It carries 320 marks.
• It is used to shortlist candidates for the Medical Examination.
• Final selection and force allocation are based on Paper-II performance, including applicable NCC bonus marks.
• English accounts for 200 out of 320 marks, or 62.5% of Paper-II.
• A strong Paper-II score is therefore essential for obtaining a preferred post or force.

Although English dominates Paper-II, candidates should not neglect the other three subjects. Together, Reasoning, General Awareness and Mathematics contribute 120 marks, which can significantly affect merit and force allocation.

Paper-I Score Calculation

Paper-I score = Correct answers − (Wrong answers × 0.25)

Example: If a candidate answers 80 questions correctly and 12 incorrectly:

Score = 80 − (12 × 0.25) = 77 marks

Paper-II Score Calculation

Paper-II score = (Correct answers × 2) − (Wrong answers × 0.50)

Example: If a candidate answers 125 questions correctly and 20 incorrectly:

Score = 250 − 10 = 240 marks

Applicable normalization and NCC bonus marks will be considered separately according to SSC rules.

Candidates must obtain the prescribed minimum qualifying percentage in both Paper-I and Paper-II.

These percentages are calculated without adding NCC bonus marks.

Minimum Qualifying Marks vs Cut-Off

Minimum qualifying marks and SSC CPO cut-off marks are not the same.

• Minimum qualifying marks are the basic percentage required to remain eligible.
• Cut-off marks are determined according to vacancies, category, examination performance and the number of candidates.
• Merely obtaining the minimum qualifying percentage does not guarantee shortlisting.
• SSC may prescribe separate cut-offs for individual parts of Paper-I.

Candidates possessing a valid NCC certificate as of the application closing date receive bonus marks in both papers.

The bonus is calculated as a percentage of the maximum marks of the respective paper. Candidates must provide valid certificate details and supporting documents as required by SSC.

SSC CPO Selection Process 2026

The SSC CPO recruitment process consists of the following mandatory stages:

1. Paper-I Computer-Based Examination
2. Physical Standard Test and Physical Endurance Test
3. Paper-II Computer-Based Examination
4. Detailed Medical Examination/Review Medical Examination
5. Document Verification
6. Final selection and force allocation

Important Selection Rules

• Paper-I qualified candidates are shortlisted for PST/PET.
• PST and PET are mandatory but qualifying in nature.
• Ex-servicemen are exempted from PET, but they must undergo PST.
• Only PST/PET-qualified candidates can appear in Paper-II.
• Paper-II qualified candidates are shortlisted for DME/RME.
• Medical Examination and Document Verification are mandatory.
• Final post/force allocation is based on Paper-II marks, applicable NCC bonus marks and the candidate’s order of preference.

As stated in Paragraph 16.8 of the official notification, final selection and allocation of post or force will be made based on:

• Marks obtained in Paper-II;
• Applicable NCC bonus marks;
• Qualification in PST/PET, DME/RME and Document Verification; and
• Preference of posts and forces submitted by the candidate.

Therefore, Paper-I is extremely important for reaching the subsequent stage, but Paper-II is the principal merit-deciding examination.

Candidates should fill their post and force preferences carefully. Once a candidate is allotted the first available preference according to merit, the candidate will not be considered for a lower preference.

If two or more candidates obtain equal aggregate marks, the tie will be resolved in the following order:

1. Higher total marks in Paper-II;
2. Higher marks in the English section of Paper-II;
3. Older candidate according to date of birth;
4. Alphabetical order of candidates’ names.

If Paper-I or Paper-II is conducted in multiple shifts, SSC will normalize candidates’ scores according to its officially prescribed procedure.

Normalized marks—not merely raw marks—will be used for:

• Determining cut-off marks;
• Shortlisting candidates;
• Preparing results; and
• Applying applicable NCC bonus marks.

This process is intended to account for differences in the difficulty levels of different examination shifts.

1. Prepare Paper-I With a Sectional-Timer Strategy

Every section must be completed in 15 minutes. Candidates should practise:

• 15-minute Reasoning tests;
• 15-minute General Awareness tests;
• 15-minute Quantitative Aptitude tests; and
• 15-minute English tests.

2. Start Paper-II Preparation From the Beginning

Waiting until after PST/PET to prepare for Paper-II may be risky. Paper-II is more difficult, carries 320 marks and determines final merit.

3. Give Special Attention to English

English carries 200 marks in Paper-II. Preparation should cover:

• Grammar and error recognition;
• Vocabulary;
• Synonyms and antonyms;
• Fill in the blanks;
• Sentence structure;
• Idioms and phrases;
• Sentence completion; and
• Reading comprehension.

4. Maintain Accuracy

Because negative marking applies in both papers, random guessing can reduce the final score. Attempt questions based on accuracy rather than only maximizing attempts.

5. Combine Written and Physical Preparation

Candidates should prepare simultaneously for the computer-based papers and PST/PET. Written examination qualification alone is insufficient if the prescribed physical standards or endurance tests are not cleared.
